How to remove any smell from laundry (even if you forgot it in the machine for two days)

Prevention is easier

  • Never leave wet laundry in the machine for more than 8 hours.

  • Leave the machine door open between loads to let the drum dry.

  • Run a hot empty cycle with two cups of vinegar once a month to clean the machine itself.

Special case: sports gear

Synthetic fabrics (polyester, spandex) trap sweat bacteria that regular washing misses. Soak smelly gym clothes in a bucket of cold water with half a cup of vinegar for 30 minutes before washing. Then wash as normal. The vinegar breaks down the biofilm that causes that permanent “gym bag” smell.

Reader story: “I was about to throw away my favourite running shirts. The vinegar soak saved them. I couldn’t believe it cost 50 cents instead of $100 for new gear.” – Matt, 34, Newcastle.

What not to do

Don’t use fabric softener on smelly clothes. It coats fibres with wax, trapping bacteria underneath. Don’t use bleach on colours (obvious) or on synthetic fabrics (it degrades the material). Stick to vinegar and baking soda. They’re cheap, safe, and effective.
